Manipur

Capital: Imphal
Area: 22,327 square km.
Population: 2,388,634 (2004)
South of Nagaland and north of Mizoram, Manipur also borders with Burma. The state is inhabited by over two dozen different tribes, many of them Christians. The state is famous for its Manipuri dances and its handloomed textiles. Imphal (population 110,000) is the capital, surrounded by wooded hills and lakes and with the golden Shri Govindaji temple. During WW II a road was built from Imphal to Tamu on the Burma border but, as with the Stillwell road further north, this route into Burma is also closed.
